Re: Taiwanese Americans to protest Hu Jintao at White House
The 18 undersigned Taiwanese-American organizations will be staging a demonstration in Washington D.C. against Chinese President Hu Jintao when he visits the White House. The protest activities will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 20th at the Lafayette Park (Pennsylvania Ave. & 16th Street). Among the scheduled events are speeches to be delivered, beginning at 11:30 a.m., by the various organization leaders from across the country.
The Taiwanese-Americans wish to call international attention to the fact that a repressive China is threatening a democratic Taiwan, in particular by aiming 800 missiles at the peaceful island nation. The organizations state that China is fast building up its military capabilities in order to enforce its sinister “anti-secession law” which aims to annex Taiwan, thus depriving Taiwanese people the freedom of choice in determining their own future. China’s military expansion also threatens the peace and stability of the western Pacific and is contrary to the U.S. national interests, according to the demonstration organizers.
The organizations demand that Hu dismantle the 800 missiles and renounce the use of force against Taiwan. The organizations support a free, democratic and independent Taiwan, and call on President George Bush to persuade Hu to normalize relations and live in peace with Taiwan.
The Taiwanese Americans also urge the nations of the world to stop colluding with China in isolating Taiwan, and to accept the free and democratic Taiwan as a full and equal member of the international community.
The Taiwanese-American organizations will be joined by the Students for a Free Tibet, International Tibet Independence Movement, Uyghur Association of America and Laogai Research Foundation. In a show of solidarity, they will jointly voice their strong opposition to Chinese imperialism.
