Speech Tour with Yi-Mao about Taiwanese Lesbians in the US

New York, Mar 30 - Taiwan Women Feminist Speech Series Spring 2001 presents Yi-Miao Huang and her thesis: "Together: Taiwanese American Lesbians in the U.S." that looks at the life experiences of ten Taiwanese lesbians living in the U.S.

There will be two sessions offered to the general public.  The first is English session that will be on Thursday, April 5, 7 PM to 9 PM.  The next is Mandarin session on Saturday, April 7, 8 PM to 10 PM (Mandarin) and group activity after.  Both session will be held at 721 Broadway, NYU Tisch School of the Arts 6th Floor ROOM 656.  This event is co-sponsored by Taiwan Women, NYU Cinema Studies Department, CUNY Graduate School, Taiwanese Student Association, New School University Taiwanese Student Association and Columbia University Teachers College Taiwanese Student Association with free admission.

Her research provides a general overview of Taiwan's LGBT movement and examines how it is related to the women interviewed. She also focuses on issues of multiple identities-nationality, race, gender, and sexuality. Furthermore, she looks at issues of community belonging and formation among Taiwanese American lesbians. She examines how "becoming out" characterizes their interactions with various communities. Finally, she turns to issues of lesbian gender identities and sees how Taiwanese and Taiwanese American lesbian gender cultures provide answers toward more liberating and progressive communities.

Yi-Miao Huang received her degree in women's studies at the George Washington University. She worked at GLAAD (the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) for one and a half years and focused on the representation of LGBT people of color in the media.

Taiwan Women (TW) is a network founded to facilitate communication and co-operation among Taiwanese women, in particularly those who are studying or living in the North America. The main focus has been on gender-and-sexuality issues and current situation of Taiwanese women. By discussing these issues and sharing experiences, TW hopes to cultivate a channel of female voices. Since the inception in 1995, TW Email List is built, annual TW winter Camp is held, annual Feminist Lecture series is established, and a newsletter is published. The goal is to strengthen the solidarity of sisterhood so as to mitigate current gender-and-sexuality inequality situation and to succeed in shaping a new Taiwanese society with gender-and-sexuality justice.
